Yane Calovski (1973, Skopje) studied Sculpture and Architecture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1992-96) and Bennington College (B.A., 1997) and Culture and Media Production from Linköpings Universitet (M.A., 2010). Calovski was a Researcher at the Jan Van Eyck Academy (2002-04) and the CCA Kitakyushu (1999-00), and has received an ORTung Fellowship (2012), Allians Kulturstiftung Award (2004) and Pew Fellowship in the Arts (2001), among other recognitions.
His context-oriented installations, publications, and curatorial projects, combine modernist archives concerned with architecture with empirical ideas situated in the site-specificity of different cultural, social and political geographies.
Calovski has exhibited, screened and published internationally including Bunkier Sztuki Gallery of Modern Art in Krakow, Bauhaus Foundation Dessau, Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Kunsthalle Bregenz, Akbank Art Center, Tate Britain, European Kunsthalle, The Nederland Media Art Institute, Konshallen Brandts, Baltic Art Center, Contemporary Art Center Vilnius, The Drawing Center - New York, and others venues. He has exhibited at Macedonian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennial (with Hristina Ivanoska, 2015), the Helsinki Photography Biennial 2014, D-0 ARK Underground 2012, Manifesta 7 (2008) and Manifesta 3 (2000). His works are part of a number of public and private collections including Van Abbenmuseum, Zorlu Center Art Collection, Deutsche Bank Collection, and the Art Telekom Collection.
In 2012 the Zorlu Center Art Collection published Yane Calovski: OBJE’CT, a monograph edited by Basak Senova. He collaborates with Hristina Ivanoska with whom he cofounded Press to exit project space in Skopje (2004). His work has been presented at FRIEZE London, Art Basel, Vienna Art Fair and Istanbul Contemporary. He is represented by Zak|Branicka.
Calovski lives and works in Skopje and Berlin.
